Why Do We Wear Wedding Rings?

Before you say "I do," you should learn a little about the history of wedding rings.
Before you say "I do," you should learn a little about the history of wedding rings.
The wedding ring is traditionally an unbroken circle, which symbolizes eternity and everlasting love.

It’s believed that Egyptians were the first people to wear wedding bands. The circle was a powerful symbol in Egyptian society, symbolizing immortality or never-ending life. Using a ring as a symbol of a marriage was a way of identifying two people who are going to be together forever and belong to each other for eternity.

The wedding ring has been worn on the fourth finger of the left hand since ancient Roman times. The Romans believed that there was a vein that ran from the fourth finger directly to the heart, creating a connection from hand to heart. Rings were worn on the left hand because it was closer to the heart, strengthening the connection.

In other ancient cultures, only the bride (sometimes multiple brides) were required to wear a wedding band or ring identifying her as “belonging” to her husband. In modern times, the exchanging and wearing of rings has become mutual. The practice is no longer about branding women as property. It evolved into a symbol of love between two people.

In addition to wedding bands, traditionally women are given an engagement ring. This symbolizes the intent to be married. Bands are usually exchanged during the wedding ceremony when wedding vows are exchanged.  After the marriage ceremony the engagement ring is worn “under” the wedding ring. This practice seems to date back to the “hand to heart” connection. The wedding band is worn “over” the engagement ring to seal the commitment.

Since these rings are meant to last a lifetime, they are usually made of precious metals like gold or silver. Usually the engagement ring is more elaborate with settings that include diamonds and other gems. The rings can even be designed specifically for and by the couple and engraved on the inside with names, wedding dates and other terms of affection.

Wedding rings have become an outward symbol of love between two people and a symbol of their commitment to each other. Wearing these rings tells everyone of a couple’s intention to be together forever.
