Healing Thy Self - Understanding your Chakras

Heard lots about Chakras, but never knew what they were? Chakras are energy nodes within our bodies. The word Chakra comes from the Sanskrit "cakra" meaning "wheel, circle", and sometimes also referring to the "wheel of life".

Some cultures believe chakras regulate the flow of energy throughout our entire energy system through our actions in how we choose to live our lives.

There are seven main chakras aligned in an ascending column from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra is associated with a certain color, specific functions, an aspect of consciousness, and a classical element.

Chakras are not physical in nature, but elements of our consciousness in much the same way that auras are aspects of consciousness. Chakras are thought to interact with the physical body through the endocrine system and the nervous system. Thus, the chakras represent not only particular parts of your physical body, but also particular parts of your consciousness.

When you feel tension in your consciousness, you feel it in the chakra associated with that part of your consciousness, and in the parts of the physical body associated with that chakra. Where you feel the stress depends upon why you feel the stress – reflecting the idea again that we regulate our energy flow through our actions.
