Summer's Here!

June 22nd, will mark the arrival of summer with the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere – Summer Solstice. “Solstice” is derived from the Latin words: sol meaning sun, and sistere to stand still. As the summer solstice approaches, the noonday sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of the solstice, the sun rises an imperceptible amount compared to the day before – causing it to appear to stand still.

Throughout the ages mankind has celebrated the Solstice and observed it with many different cultural and religious traditions.

Also referred to as Midsummer- it is the time when the sun reaches the peak of its power, the earth is green and holds the promise of a bountiful harvest. The Druids celebrated the Solstice as the wedding of Heaven and Earth. Some ancient pagan cultures celebrated on the eve of the longest day of the year with bonfires and festivals. Midsummer's Eve was believed to be a magical night – a night of love magic and love oracles.
