What is the least understood and probably most feared card within the Tarot? A large number would say the Devil card. Most variations of this card depict a menacing medieval type devil complete with wings, horns, and hooves – enough to cause a shiver in anyone who sees this card in their spread. The Devil sits perched above two smaller human like figures – one male and one female who are loosely chained around the neck. But should it be feared? No. The Devil in Tarot does not represent satanic forces with evil intent, but rather is synonymous with ambition, temptation and indulgence. He is the Great Pan – pagan god of nature and all things natural including sex and lust, of wild behavior and unbridled desires.
In Excess?
When the Devil card appears in your Tarot spread it is telling you it is time to reassess your indulgence of the material – the things of this world that hold you back from spiritual growth. Often, there is a sexual component to excess such as an abusive relationship. It’s time to release yourself of ties and activities that you know are harmful to you, but hard to give up. The chains holding the human figures represent the limitations that we impose on ourselves and keep us firmly shackled in the same position. Yet, the chains are loose and indicate our own ability to free ourselves by releasing our obsessive ambitions.
When your Tarot spread reflects a reversed Devil card, it is telling you that your feelings of being trapped are related to your own attitudes and values. It may be time to let your hair down a little and indulge. Take the time to know yourself and push your boundaries by learning to allow others to get to know you more deeply. But remember to strike a balance because this card is all about indulgence.
