On Thursday, June 21st at 2:06 pm EST, summer officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere on the longest day of the year – Summer Solstice.  “Solstice” is derived from the Latin words: sol meaning sun, and sistere to stand still. As the summer solstice approaches, the noonday sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of the solstice, the sun rises an imperceptible amount compared to the day before – causing it to appear to stand still.   At that point, the sun reaches its peak to make it the longest day of the year.  Each day thereafter gets gradually shorter until the sun makes its lowest arc across the sky and marks the shortest day of the year – Winter Solstice.

The Summer Solstice is very important to our planet and its relationship with the sun. Throughout the ages mankind has celebrated the solstice and observed it with many different cultural and religious traditions.

Midsummer Magic?

Also referred to as Midsummer- it is the time when the sun reaches the peak of its power, the earth is green and holds the promise of a bountiful harvest. The Druids celebrated Solstice as the wedding of Heaven and Earth. Some ancient pagan cultures celebrated on the eve of the longest day of the year with bonfires and festivals.  Midsummer’s Eve was believed to be a magical night – a night of love magic and love oracles.
